In 1966, while he was reporting on Andy Warhol for Life Magazine, Steve Schapiro photographed Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground in a ruined castle of the Hollywood Hills. They were waiting to be paid for the show Exploding Plastic Inevitable, for which they were engaging. Steve also photographed members of Velvet Specter Studios in New York, when they recorded their first album with Nico.
